A retinal detachment happens when the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye comes away from the tissue beneath. Time matters.
Optometrist
An eye-care professional who tests sight, checks eye health and can refer you for specialist care.
How retinal detachment can affect day-to-day life
You may recognise some of these situations, or none of them. The point is to find help with the things you want to do.
A sudden interruption
A new dark shadow, flashes, floaters or sudden blur can appear while reading, working or travelling.
Get urgent help. This is a reason to contact care services, not to try lighting or screen adjustments first.
Work and reading after surgery
Sight may remain blurred during recovery, and time away from work may be needed.
Ask the surgical team about your work and usual activities. Arrange help with tasks you cannot see clearly enough to manage.
Travel and positioning
Recovery may involve sitting or lying in a particular position. Driving and flying may be restricted.
Follow your own surgical instructions and check travel plans with the team, especially if a gas bubble was used in your eye.
Changes you may notice
- New flashes or a sudden increase in floaters.
- A shadow or curtain across your vision, or a sudden blur.
Everyone is different. Symptoms on their own cannot identify a condition.
What to do about a new or sudden changeAssessment and care
Get urgent advice from an optometrist or NHS 111. If you suddenly cannot see, go to A&E or call 999. A specialist can arrange surgery or treatment for a retinal tear.
How vision is affected
These topics explain the parts of vision involved. They do not predict your sight, diagnose anything or show the condition itself.
Visual field
Finding a face and noticing the edge of a step make different demands on sight. One uses the centre of your view. The other uses the edges.
