Settings built into this site

Open Accessibility at the top of any page. Your choices are saved on this device and apply to every page.

  • Page colours: light, dark, yellow or high contrast. Each one is a single button at the top of the settings.
  • Text size: up to 200 per cent without anything breaking.
  • Text spacing: extra space between lines, letters and words.
  • Plain layout: removes the coloured panels and large pictures and shows the text in one column.
  • Hide visual demonstrations: replaces the vision explorer images with written explanations.

Nothing on the site moves or flashes on its own, every control works with a keyboard, and every image has a text description.

Make everything bigger

Browser zoom enlarges text, buttons and pictures together.

  • Windows: hold Ctrl and press +. Ctrl and 0 resets.
  • Mac: hold Cmd and press +. Cmd and 0 resets.
  • Phone or tablet: pinch outwards with two fingers.

This site reflows at every zoom level, so you never need to scroll sideways.

Use the keyboard instead of a mouse

  • Tab moves to the next link or button. Shift and Tab moves back.
  • Enter opens a link. Space presses a button or ticks a box.
  • Arrow keys move sliders in the vision explorer and labs.
  • Press Tab once when a page loads and a "Skip to main content" link appears.
  • Esc closes the accessibility settings.

Change the font in your browser

Chrome, Edge and Firefox let you set a minimum text size and a font of your choice for every website. Look under Settings, then Appearance (Chrome and Edge) or Fonts (Firefox). This site uses Atkinson Hyperlegible, a font designed for low vision, but your own choice wins if you set one.

Reader view

Most browsers offer a reader view which strips a page to its text. In Safari and Firefox, look for the page icon in the address bar. In Edge, choose Immersive Reader. On this site, the Plain layout in Accessibility settings does a similar job and keeps the links.

Magnifier on your phone or computer

  • Windows: hold the Windows key and press + to open Magnifier.
  • Mac: Settings, Accessibility, Zoom. Turn on keyboard shortcuts or scroll gesture zoom.
  • iPhone and iPad: Settings, Accessibility, Zoom. The Magnifier app also uses the camera to enlarge print.
  • Android: Settings, Accessibility, Magnification. Tap the screen three times to zoom in.

Bigger, bolder text on your phone

  • iPhone and iPad: Settings, Accessibility, Display and Text Size. Larger Text, Bold Text and Increase Contrast all help.
  • Android: Settings, Accessibility, Display size and text. Phone makers place this differently, so search Settings for "font size".

Websites built well, including this one, follow these settings.

Have pages read aloud

  • Screen readers: VoiceOver on iPhone, iPad and Mac, TalkBack on Android, Narrator on Windows. NVDA is a free screen reader for Windows.
  • Read aloud without a screen reader: Edge has Read Aloud in the address bar menu. iPhone has Speak Screen under Accessibility, Spoken Content.
  • Each condition guide on this site has a "Listen to this guide" button.

Colours, glare and motion

  • Dark mode on your phone or computer makes bright screens easier on the eyes. This site follows your choice unless you pick a colour mode yourself.
  • iPhone and Android both offer colour filters for colour vision deficiency under Accessibility.
  • Reduce Motion in your device settings turns off animation. This site respects the setting.
  • Night Shift (Apple) and Night Light (Windows and Android) cut blue light in the evening.

Use your voice

  • Dictation: tap the microphone on your phone keyboard to type by speaking.
  • Voice Control (Apple) and Voice Access (Android and Windows): move around the screen and press buttons with spoken commands.

Menu names change between software versions. If a setting has moved, search your device settings for the name given here. Checked 4 October 2026.
